Considering Abortion?

Your body . . . your pregnancy. . .your choice.

Seek answers to your questions before you decide.

Be informed. Be empowered.

Sit down in a quiet spot with some paper and a pencil. Write down your thoughts and questions. Do some research. (See our website referrals.) Decide where you stand. Learn the terminology. Ask questions. Prepare yourself to make an informed decision. Find out what to expect and what resources are out there. Then discuss your findings with someone you can trust. (We are here if you need us . . . you aren’t alone!)

Some basic questions to get you started:
Are you sure you are pregnant? Is this a viable, intrauterine pregnancy? How far along into your pregnancy are you? How long do you have to decide? (You can schedule a sonogram with us to help you answer any of the above questions.)

Which procedure will be required to terminate this pregnancy? What are the possible side effects, risks and complications associated with each procedure? (The state of Texas has released the publication A Woman’s Right to Know that can be found online at www.dshs.state.tx.us/wrtk/pdf/booklet.pdf or you may request a copy from our staff.)

Will the clinic treat you for complications on site or transport you? If hospitalization is necessary, which hospital would be used and what are the insurance requirements? (The answer to these questions will be determined by the provider that you select. Talk with at least three providers before you set an appointment. If you feel rushed or pressured, then that is not the right Clinic or Provider for you.)

How do I know which clinic to choose? Are there “bad” clinics? Have there been lawsuits or complaints filed against the doctor or the clinic? (The Texas Department of Health licenses each facility. You have the right to access information concerning any facility including the status of licensure, the date of the last inspection and any violations discovered at inspection. Any fines assessed to the facility or its physicians may also be reported to you. You may access this information by calling 1-888-973-0022. Your identity will remain anonymous.)

How can STD’s affect an abortion? When was your last STD test? (We can provide you with information and a referral for testing, if needed.)

What are the signs and symptoms of emotional distress following an abortion? What should I know after my abortion? (We can connect you with a counselor from The PATH Project which is a program geared towards helping those affected by abortion.)
The key is to educate yourself before you choose and be equipped to handle any outcome.
